English: St Mary's church - peacock in churchyard Peacocks from the adjoining Hall can be seen foraging in the churchyard - this one is taking a rest.
There are three churches in a row in Church Road > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1345402 which is a cul-de-sac running parallel with the busy A146 (Norwich Road). At its southern end there is the Catholic church Our Lady of Perpetual Succour > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1345452 and at its northern end, by the roundabout, there is the ruined All Saints church. St Mary's > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1345499 is situated between the two, next to the Hall. St Mary's is essentially a Norman church with a central tower. In 1858/9 the nave and apse were rebuilt, the south transept was removed and replaced by north and south aisles. The west and north doors are Norman with the north door having the characteristic zig-zag carvings > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1345545. Sadly, the interior of the church cannot be seen because the door is kept locked without a keyholder notice. Pilgrims and visitors do not appear to be welcome here. |
